Some may ask: what exactly is the difference between learning the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and learning phonics? Simply put, phonics determines the corresponding pronunciation based on spelling; however, phonics is not 100% accurate. Using phonics to teach young children beginner-level English pronunciation is understandable, but for working adults and English learners at secondary level or above, learning to read the IPA transcription of each English word in the dictionary is absolutely essential. The English IPA comprises 44 symbols in total, of which 20 are monophthong or diphthong symbols. Every English syllable contains a monophthong or a diphthong.
